Micron rolls longevity program

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Micron Technology Inc. has rolled out a new product longevity program (PLP).
Micron’s PLP is for customers with long lifecycles needing legacy memory products. It is designed to provide memory products for embedded applications like automotive, medical, and industrial. Under the plan, Micron will make a range of devices available for a minimum of 10 years.
''The 10+ year lifecycles for Micron PLP products will begin at the time of introduction into PLP and will include extended Micron product change notification policy (one-year notice for placement of final orders and an additional year until the last ship date) – providing a two year conversion timeline,'' according to Micron.
The initial products in Micron's longevity program include DRAM, parallel and serial NOR, and low-density NAND. Micron intends to add products to the PLP on an ongoing basis.
''We're providing a safe choice for long lifecycle designs,'' said Tom Eby, vice president of Micron's embedded solutions group. "The PLP's assurance of extended product availability and support reduces design risk and protects the investment made by Micron's customers and chipset partners serving market segments like medical, automotive and industrial.''
Micron has garned industry support for Micron's PLP. It has ''informal'' relationships with various vendors and distributors, Eby said.
Partners include Avnet, Arrow, Freescale, TI and Renesas.

It's good to see Micron taking the embedded market seriously. Others memory providers, especially in NOR, have been doing this for years now.

Does this mean that Micron is admitting defeat in the technology race with Samsung, and focusing more on low-tech nich products?

No, I don't think so. They are trying to be all things to all people which in the end isn't a strategy that works. Samsung is successful as it focuses on the high end and serving the big volume applications. Micron is focused mostly on this too and in the end I think us "little guys" end up falling off their radar, redarless of what their news states. Reading further on their site it seems they are leaving some pretty big loopholes in their new committment. "The PLP is not a commitment to a static product, nor is it a guarantee of supply. Micron reserves the right to exclude certain products and customers from eligibility for the PLP."
