AMD, Mentor snag ESC best in show awards

SAN FRANCISCO—Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) and Mentor Graphics Corp. were named by winners consulting firm VDC Research Group Inc. of the firm's "Embeddy" awards for best in show at the 2011 Embedded Systems Conference.
AMD took home the hardware Embeddy for its embedded G-Series application processor unit (APU) product, VDC said. AMD's Radeon E6760 is the first graphics chip for embedded systems to support Microsoft's DirectX 11, the OpenCL standard and up to six simultaneous displays, according to AMD.
"We selected the AMD Embedded G-Series processor because it is an integrated circuit that combines a low-power CPU and a discrete-level GPU into a single embedded accelerated processing unit for advanced graphics and multi-media integration," said Richard Dean, program manager at VDC's Embedded Hardware practice. "Among the benefits are the integration of the APU, which reduces the foot print size of a three-chip platform to two chips, and the overall reduction in costs across the product's lifecycle."
VDC (Natick, Mass.) also awarded a software Embeddy to Mentor Graphics Corp. for its Embedded Sourcery System Analyzer technology, a specialized tool that helps embedded developers to quickly visualize and analyze system data. The tool is part of Mentor's Sourcery CodeBench integrated development environment, which was announced at the show.
"Engineering organizations are utilizing more complex hardware architectures, which places greater strain on their ability to efficiently debug and optimize software code," said Chris Rommel, senior analyst at VDC’s Embedded Software practice. "We expect that tools such as Mentor Graphics’ Sourcery Systems Analyzer will become increasingly valuable to engineering teams as they look for greater insight into the performance of their applications on new, complex target architectures."
The Embeddy award winners were given an overall rating score of one to five and were selected based on the following specific criteria: corporate, technological and industry significance and availability, VDC said. The identification of a VDC Embeddy award winner does not constitute an endorsement by VDC of any vendor, product or service, the firm said.
