Sematech names manufacturing chief

6/6/2011 11:30 AM EDT

SAN FRANCISCO—Semiconductor R&D consortium Sematech Monday (June 6) appointed former Spansion and AMD executive Richard Young to the position of vice president of manufacturing.

Young, who has more than 15 years of chip manufacturing experience, will oversee strategic development and operations for Sematech’s manufacturing-related programs at Sematech headquarters in  Albany, N.Y., Sematech said. He will be responsible for assuring that Sematech’s strategic direction and its execution support critical manufacturing areas as well as increasing the depth and diversity of industry participation in Sematech's programs, the organization said.

"I look forward to building new opportunities for Sematech and finding new ways to strategically leverage our partnerships to continually provide manufacturing productivity improvements to the industry," Young said in a statement.

Young was previously vice president of operations at Kovio Inc., a venture-backed printed semiconductor IDM. Prior to that, he held senior management and engineering positions at Spansion, AMD, Industrial Design Corp. and Shimizu America Corp., a subsidiary of Japan’s largest design and build general contractor.
