Former Spansion CTO joins memory startup

SAN FRANCISCO— Michael Van Buskirk, former chief technology officer at Spansion Inc. and a longtime engineer at Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD), was named chief technology officer of non-volatile memory chip startup Adesto Technologies Corp. Tuesday (Aug. 16).
Van Buskirk spent more than 20 years combined at AMD and Spansion (which spun out of AMD in 2005). In addition to being CTO at Spansion, he held other roles including vice president of worldwide engineering and corporate vice president. Van Buskirk is credited with the corporate-wide development of MirrorBit technology at AMD. MirrorBit replaced Spansion's floating gate technology after the 90-nm process node and become the basis for all of the firm's non-volatile memory products.
Adesto (Sunnyvale, Calif.) is a startup company developing conductive bridging RAM nonvolatile memory technology. The company, founded in 2006, is backed by several venture capital investors. Adesto said in June it plans to ship products this year manufactured by foundry partner Altis Semiconductor SA.
"CBRAM has the potential to be deployed across a wide range of code and data storage applications in both discrete chips and embedded SOCs," Van Buskirk said in a statement. "Adesto has made tremendous progress in commercializing CBRAM and I look forward to being part of the team that is successfully bringing CBRAM to market."
Also Tuesday, Adesto announced that Ravi Sunkavalli, formerly the vice president of hardware engineering at programmable logic startup Achronix Inc., joined Adesto as vice president of product development.
