LONDON – Globalfoundries Inc. has appointed Rutger Wijburg as vice president and general manager of its manufacturing campus in Dresden, Germany – known as Fab 1 – with effect from October 2011.

Wijburg will report to Kay Chai Ang, senior vice president of 300-mm fab operations, who has been leading the Dresden fab on an interim basis. Wijburg joins Globalfoundries (Milpitas, Calif.) from NXP Semiconductors NV (Eindhoven, The Netherlands), formerly Philips Semiconductors, where he held executive and senior management positions over more than 20 years. Most recently, Wijburg was senior vice president and general manager of manufacturing operations and worldwide real estate and facilities for NXP. In that position he managed multiple wafer fabs on three continents.

Wijburg will now lead a Dresden fab with more than 3,000 employees. The site is ramping an additional 52,000 square foot clean room and makes ICs on wafers using 45/40-, 32- and 28-nanometer process technologies. Globalfoundries also has wafers in Singapore and Saratoga County, New York and has more than 11,000 employees worldwide.

"Given his global fab and operations experience, Rutger will be a tremendous asset to Globalfoundries as we continue to transform and accelerate our growth to be the leading global, independent semiconductor manufacturer," said CEO Ajit Manocha, in a statement.
