SAN FRANCISCO—Analog Devices Inc. Thursday (Sept. 8) introduced an audio/video (AV) front-end chip for home theaters that integrates AV processing, support for HDMI specification version 1.4 for 3-D resolution and includes the first HDMI receiver to support THX Media Director embedded metadata.

ADI (Norwood, Mass.) said its ADV7850 is designed for improving video image, color quality and audio clarity in advanced high-definition (HD) systems, including HDTVs, AV receivers, video switchers and projectors. The device integrates four key components, including a graphics and video digitizer, 3-D comb video decoder, HDMI receiver and stereo audio codec, according to ADI. It also supports HDCP repeater applications and can be operated as an HDMI transceiver, the company said.

"It's definitely a very complete chip—the most complete interface chip that we've ever made," said Doug Bartow, strategic marketing manager at ADI.

The ADV7850's 3-D comb video decoder features an integrated 170 MHz video and graphics digitizer for HD 1080p input formats, offering superior processing resolution for motion detection and 3-D comb filtering operations without the added cost and design complexity of discrete chip solutions, according to ADI.

Media Director, created by THX Ltd., is described as a unique technology that transforms movies, music, games and other digital media into "smart content" that enables AV components to auto-select the most appropriate audio and video playback settings, preserving artistic intent. ADI is one of a handful of chip vendors initially rolling out chips that support the technology, including Silicon Image Inc.

ADV7850 is compatible with other ADI components, including the Advantiv digital crosspoint switches, Blackfin and SHARC processors, iMEMs microphones and power management ICs, ADI said. The device is sampling now, available in 425-BGA packages and priced at $34.45 per unit in 1,000 unit quantities, ADI said.
