Pioneer of EDA to speak at IEF event

LONDON – Professor Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli, of the University of California, Berkeley electronic engineering and computer science department, is one of two keynote speakers added to the program of the International Electronics Forum to be held at the Ayre Hotel, 5-7th October 2011, Seville, Spain.

Sangiovanni-Vincentelli, also known as ASV, is sometimes described as one of the fathers of the Electronic Design Automation (EDA) industry. This is because, as well as being a distinguished academic ASV helped found both Cadence Design Systems Inc. and Synopys Inc., two of the pioneers of the EDA industry. Born in Italy ASV was a graduate of Politecnico di Milano in 1971 before joining the University of California, Berkeley in 1976.

A second addition the list of speakers is Sara Coronenwett, senior director of technology development at Abu Dhabi owned foundry Globalfoundries Inc. (Milpitas, Calif.). Coronenwett, a Stanford PhD in physics, came to Globalfoundries via time spent at McKinsey and Company and then with Advanced Technology Investment Corp., the state-owned company through which Abu Dhabi owns the majority of Globalfoundries.

The IEF, organized by Future Horizons (Sevenoaks, England) is now in its 20th year. It includes more than one dozen high-level speakers that address the complete electronics value chain from advanced technology and R&D through to end-market applications and services. This year the assembled C-level executives will attempt to delineate and make sense of the "new rules" that govern the electronics industry.

In addition to ASV and Coronenwett this year's speakers are set to include: Andrea Cuomo, executive vice president of STMicroelectronics; Maria Marced, president of TSMC Europe; Rich Goldman, vice president of strategic market development at Synopsys; Joseph  Sawicki, general manager of the design-to -silicon division of Mentor Graphics and Zvi Or-Bach, CEO MonolithIC 3D.

Luc Van den Hove, CEO of IMEC is due to present an advanced research perspective while Hossein Yassaie, CEO of Imagination Technologies and Young Sohn, CEO Inphi Corp., are scheduled to take part in a Friday panel discussion. Malcolm Penn, founder and principal analyst with Future Horizons, will provide his own analysis of the market data coming from World Semiconductor Trade Statistics and other sources and provide forecasts for the balance of 2011 and into 2012.
