MeeGo gone: Intel drops OS in favor of Tizen

Peter Clarke

LONDON – Chip giant Intel has decided to drop its MeeGo mobile operating system in favor of the Tizen project announced by two Linux-oriented non-profit groups, the LiMo Foundation and the Linux Foundation.

That is according to Imad Sousou, the director of Intel's Open Source Technology Center, writing to this effect in a MeeGo blog entry that is now hosted on the Linux Foundation website.

The Tizen project is hosted at the Linux Foundation and offers an operating system and an HTML5 development environment within which applications can be produced to run on multiple types of hardware. Smartphones, tablet computers and automobile infotainment are all being targeted by Tizen

According to Intel, Tizen will build upon the strengths of both LiMo and MeeGo and Intel will work with MeeGo partners to help them move from MeeGo to Tizen. However, this will likely set Intel and partners back in the market as the initial release of Tizen is not expected until 1Q12 and the first equipment based on Tizen will not arrive in the market before mid-2012.

Justifying the move Sousou said in the blog: "We believe the future belongs to HTML5-based applications, outside of a relatively small percentage of apps, and we are firmly convinced that our investment needs to shift toward HTML5." Sousou added: "Granted, this is a judgment on our part on which reasonable people could disagree, but that's the conclusion I came to."

Sousou concluded his blog by thanking everyone who had participated in MeeGo over the previous 18 months and appealing to them to join Intel on the Tizen project.

MeeGo has gone through a lot and finally got abandoned, becoming an orphan. Will it?

What will happen to the world of embedded OSs? Will it repeat what has happened in the PC OSs - multiple flavors and multiple offering?

MeeGo, U go, all UNIX variants should just go away. Enough already! Use something easy to use and simple. We do not need MORE operating systems. We just need one that is reliable for embedded systems.

I feel sorry for the app developers who jumped on the Moblin bandwagon. First it was Moblin/Clutter, then Meego/Qt and now Tizen/HTML5.

It's been a weird rollercoaster ride. I really hope that Tizen sticks and we have a stable embedded linux platform for both Intel and Arm.

Depressing how they throw out years of engineering work, only if they could think ahead a little without market domination clouding their peanut brains.
They can just go full steam ahead with Android and sell more units instead of pursuing some half baked idea.

First, intel has its Meego (Manathan) different from Nokia. All Nokia Meego apps have to recompile in order to work on intel's Meego platform.

Now, after Nokia stick to Microsoft WP7, intel declare abondon ship on Meego. Where's the ethic? Do you think it's easy to pickup a platform & change to another?

Leave Tizen alone & let it grow an healthy path. Pls don adopt & abandon again like a techno slut.

Octop, LoL on your last line.
I hope the same that Tizen does not get over-sold and over-promised then left to its demise.

This was predicted that MeeGo had a little chance in front of Android. It came as a "Me Too " and was never in the race!

But this Tizen looks to be another new animal. Would it succeed against the on salught of Android?

Open source always requires some backup by either technology group or industrial giant, since Intel is there along with other parties, Tizen might give hard time to Android.

Well this is not so surprising and bound to happen after Nokia's abandonment. Intel do not want to support the software development and would want to stick to the hardware only.

This may actually be a smart move on Intel's part (Gasp!). As embedded guys we see another OS, but from the point of view of application developers they just see another HTML5 platform. There are a lot more of 'them' in the world than there are 'us'.

It would be nice to see a few less OS's in the marketplace. Of course, with many of them linux based, moving from one to another is easier than it might otherwise be, but it is nevertheless not simple anymore. Larry is right that from the app developer point of view this is more in line with what is needed. Hmmm, maybe it's time to rethink career direction....

Dave, the more things change the more the continue to be the same.
Lets allow the dust to settle, and the stronger OS survive the market place for the strenth alone, and hope that it is due their thechincal strength and not just for their smoke and mirrors shows.

To a large extent if we do sit back and wait for the smoke to clear then Tizen will probably disappear. We may not do the bulk of the application programming on these platforms, but we do select them for our platforms and write the device drivers and services that help them succeed. Any OS that doesn't grab the attention of we hard-core tech types usually is headed eventually for the dustbin.

I'm not a software expert. Why do we still another Linux/Unix OS? Maybe none of the software house is large enough to influence chip vendors so they all diverge in different directions and finally there are so many different OS! We, as a consumer, has fed up with so many different OS. Please give me a simple enough and yet robust OS but not just too many to choose from!

So Intel finally found its partner for MeeGO after drop of Nokia. They tried partnership with ASUS but seems no success. Sad to hear drop of MeeGO but it was pretty clear fact.

Why do we need more Linux OS, coz we dont have widely accepted version yet, due to nature of Linux everybody can create its own version. On the other hand with help of such giants as like Intel we finally can have this highly accepted version of Linux/unix
