MANHASSET, NY -- Cryptography Research, Inc., a division of Rambus Inc., has made a cryptic announcement about signing a license agreement with a major smart phone and tablet manufacturer.
Specific terms of the agreement and disclosure of the manufacturer are confidential; all that is said that license is for the use of CRI’s Differential Power Analysis (DPA) countermeasures patents.
Under the agreement, ongoing royalties will be paid for the use of CRI’s patented innovations.
“Our DPA countermeasures technology is a key part of securing mobile devices to safeguard the data of consumers and content providers worldwide,” said Paul Kocher, president and chief scientist of Cryptography Research, in a statement
Differential Power Analysis (DPA) monitors variations in electrical power consumption of a target device and then uses advanced statistical methods to derive cryptographic keys or other secrets.
Strong countermeasures to DPA are essential for securing mobile devices, bank cards, pay television systems, secure identity products, secure storage media, and other electronic systems and components, according to CRI.
Cryptography Research has developed a portfolio of more than 55 patents covering countermeasures to DPA attacks, with additional patent applications pending worldwide.
CRI was established by cryptographer Paul Kocher and develops and licenses technologies in areas including tamper resistance, content protection, anti-counterfeiting, network security, and financial services.
Over five billion security products are made each year under license from CRI, according to the company.

@Kiran why do you think these products are not necessary? I feel these products are very much necessary to secure the data. I am sure these products will be in huge demand in future.

yalanand--Sorry; your guess is as good as mine. They made the tablet company specifically unknown, but I think that no matter who that is it will be an advantage for that company: data is becoming the knowledge advantage in the war of information exchange and all security gaps must be closed, including the ones in consumer devices.
