Nvidia Kal-El processor to emerge Nov. 9

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--Nvidia Corp.’s Kal-El quad-core SoC will emerge November 9 in Asustek Computer’s Transformer Prime tablet, Asus CEO Jonney Shih has revealed.

Kal-El, the codename for the third generation of Nvidia’s Tegra mobile processor, was due out by the end of summer or early September, but will now emerge early next month in Asus’ new 10-inch, 8.3 mm thin tablet.

The delay came down to increased validation time, an Nvidia spokesman said. “It took a little more time than we thought to get the software optimized for the hardware,” the spokesman said, denying any silicon delays.

“We are on schedule,” he added, despite the short delay for Kal-El and rumors of further hold ups in the Tegra roadmap.

Kal-El will be the first name in a product lineup based of superhero comic book characters. Superman’s Kryptonian name was Kal-El.

The Asus Transformer Prime tablet, announced on stage at the AsiaD Conference in Hong Kong last week will purportedly boast 14.5 hours of battery life and include both USB and mini-HDMI ports as well as an SD card reader. It will be the first device to boast Nvidia’s Kal-El chip, but is not thought to include the latest iteration of Google’s Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which has been optimized in its early days for Texas Instruments’ Omap 4 processor.
