LONDON – Dialog Semiconductor plc has started shipping a power management and audio IC for use by Samsung in Android smartphones, initially targeting the China TD-SCDMA market.
Dialog (Kircheim-unter-Teck, Germany) has announced it is shipping system-level power management and Class D audio ICs in a single package to Samsung for use in its S-5368 TD-SCDMA smartphone. The S-5368 is targeted at the Chinese market and will be distributed via China Mobile, the largest Chinese mobile phone operator.
The S-5368 offers touch-screen capability and is based on the Android 2.3 operating system. The power management IC is configurable for multiple phones and the audio codec IC includes a DSP, Dialog said.
"We now look forward to the global roll-out of additional models based on this platform in the coming months, which will also include smartphones for the very popular Galaxy S-II series," said Jalal Bagherli, CEO of Dialog, in a statement.
Smartphones, with an annual growth of 44 percent in the last year, accounted for 26 percent of all handset sales during Q3 2011. Samsung shipped 28 million smartphones and was the world’s largest smartphone vendor by volume with 24 percent market share, Dialog said.

Power Management along with Class-D amplifier is a very good idea so reduce the size of PCB, class D amplifier has become a necessity in all the phone due the requirement of speaker phone. This will also help in lowering the price in the competitive market.

Basically this is not a new idea and it ties the audio support into a chip not necessarily focused on audio. Such chips also tend to have less flexibility in support of the number of legacy audio interfaces.
For simple audio needs, it is fine. For rapidly evolving audio requirements (such as speaker array support, DSP effects, noise suppression and echo cancellation, a flexible dedicated audio chip is better, IMO.

It seems Dialog is winning both Apple and Samsung and this should bring them very good fortune.

Ok, but why only in China if they are so good? This, I suspect is some low cost solution for low end smart phones.

TDSCDMA is a standard developed in China and the only major market for it right now is China. It originally was a way to get around the Qualcom CDMA patents and licenses needed if China wanted to produce their own cell phone IP.

Could it be because of IP issues in other countries?
