Microchip Tech rolls low-cost MCU dev tool

11/29/2011 6:54 PM EST

SAN FRANCISCO—Microchip Technology Inc. Tuesday (Nov. 29) rolled out what it claimed is the lowest cost development tool supporting 3.3V, 16-bit and 32-bit PIC microcontrollers and 16-bit dsPIC digital signal controllers (DSCs) in 28-pin SPDIP packages.

Microchip (Chandler, Ariz.) said its Microstick II tool features everything designers need to get started designing with these microcontrollers and DSCs, including an integrated debugger and programmer, user LED, reset button, and DUT socket for easy device swapping. The USB-powered tool can be used standalone or plugged into a prototyping board for flexible development, and is supported by Microchip's MPLAB integrated development environment, according to the company.

"With this tool, we’ve made it even easier and lower cost to start developing with 16- and 32-bit PIC MCUs, and 16-bit DSCs," said Sumit Mitra, vice president of Microchip’s High-Performance Microcontroller division, in a statement.

The Microstick II tool ships with a USB cable, two 1x14 header pins for proto board use, sample MCUs, and sample DSCs, Microchip. The tool can be purchased directly from Microchip's website for $34.95.

The board description shows MPLAB support but I can't really tell if the IDE is part of the kit. Do you need to pay for it or is it free with the board?

As far as I know, the IDE is already free with compilers(non-optimized versions) for every series (PIC16/18/24/32). BTW here is a free tiny board which I have designed for hobbyists. All source is free and downloadable:
