SAN FRANCISCO—Non-volatile memory (NVM) IP vendor Kilopass Technology Inc. has expanded its manufacturing license agreement with Taiwanese foundry United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) to cover process technology spanning from 55 nm to 130 nm, the companies said Wednesday (Nov. 30).

Previously, Kilopass (Santa Clara, Calif.) and UMC (Hsinchu, Taiwan) signed an agreement covering 40-nm low-power process technology. Kilopass, founded in 2001, has entered into numerous deals to provide its memory IP through foundries including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd., Dongbu Hitek Co. Ltd. and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp.

"We see Kilopass’ OTP [one time programmable] roadmap, customer adoption, and broad portfolio of unique offerings as convincing factors for an ideal OTP partner for UMC," said S.C. Chien, vice president of customer engineering, ip development and design support at UMC, in a statement. "Their logic NVM solutions will nicely complement UMC’s existing embedded NVM portfolio, which includes eFlash, eE2PROM, eMTP, eOTP and eFuse.  We look forward to Kilopass continuing the excellent support it has delivered thus far."

Kilopass and UMC said they plan to further extend the agreement to cover UMC's 28-nm high-k metal gate and poly/SiOn processes based on customer demand. The agreement enables mutual customers of the two companies to incorporate Kilopass' XPM, Gusto and Itera NVM products into their SoCs built on a wide range of UMC process nodes, the companies said.

"Finally, we have achieved our strategic initiative of covering the broad range of UMC product line so we can be truly successful in greater China, where customers appreciate UMC’s focus on best price/performance and customer-first business approach," said Charlie Cheng, Kilopass president and CEO.
