Cray to provide supercomputer to Kyoto University

SAN FRANCISCO--Supercomputer maker Cray Inc. has been contracted to build a new supercomputer for the Academic Center for Computing and Media Studies (ACCMS) at Kyoto University in Kyoto, Japan.
The firm said it would deliver a 300-teraflops Cray XE6 supercomputer in 2012 and follow up with a 400-teraflops supercomputer code-named “Cascade” in 2014.
Cray is the first non-Japanese supercomputer vendor chosen as a prime contractor and supplier to one of Japan’s seven major national universities. The deal would also bring Cray its first order for a Cascade system in Asia.
The system will primarily be used by researchers and engineers at the ACCMS studying the information technology infrastructure and information media. The center has four research departments for networking, multimedia oriented educational computer systems, academic digital contents, and supercomputing, but the system will also be used by other research institutes from across Japan.
“The mission of ACCMS is not only to apply direct research products and advanced technologies obtained through research to the infrastructural and multimedia IT systems in Kyoto University, but also to provide them to the nation-wide academic community with which we pursue collaborative research,“ noted Professor Hiroshi Nakashima, director of ACCMS.
The Cray XE6 supercomputer will be based on AMD’s new Opteron processors (formerly codenamed Interlagos) and include Cray’s Gemini system interconnect, purportedly capable of tens of millions of MPI messages per second, to take advantage of the system’s massively multicore processors.

Cray said it hoped the system would bring production petascale computing “to a new and expanded base of HPC users.”
The firm said both the XE6 and Cascade would be fully upgradeable from the Cray XT5 and Cray XT6 line, boasting improved interconnect performance, better network resiliency, a more scalable software environment and the ability to run a broad array of ISV applications.
Cascade will also feature Cray’s Linux Environment, a new interconnect chipset follow-on to Gemini and will boast support for future Intel Xeon processors.
Cray made clear that while it had already been selected to provide the systems to the ACCMS, the firm had yet to finalize the contract, and that purchasing and procurement would be subject to the deal closing.
