Report: Intel has 14-nm process running in the lab

LONDON – Intel has the follow-on to its 22-nm manufacturing process technology running in its laboratories, according to a report that quotes Pat Bliemer, managing director for Intel Northern Europe.

The report was in the form of an interview conducted by Nordic Hardware with Bliemer.

"We need to keep going and you can trust me that in our labs we actually have the next generation after 22nm running, so we need to keep going.... I cannot really disclose more about that other than that in a laboratory environment, absolutely we do have the path, our engineers do have the path to actually go and produce 14-nm products," the report quoted Bliemer as saying.

Intel is expected to roll out its first products manufactured using the 22-nm process known as 1270 in the first quarter of 2012, most notably the Ivy Bridge processor. The 1270 process includes the use of tri-gate transistors, otherwise known as FinFETs. The report quotes Bliemer saying this will put Intel "one and a half nodes" ahead of its competition – whatever half a node is.
