Smart meter deployment on the rise globally

Smart meter and smart grid deployments have increased significantly during 2011, particularly in North America, according to a newly released report by market watcher Pike Research.
According to the firm’s analysis, global smart meter shipments reached 19.2 million in 3Q 2011, which represents a 5.3 percent increase over 2Q 2011.
“Global smart grid deployments continue to enjoy strong growth momentum, particularly those involving smart meter rollouts,” said senior analyst Neil Strother, in a statement. “Projects continue to expand in the United States and Canada, and we are seeing the beginning stages of a massive smart meter deployment in China.”
According to a new tracker report from Pike Research, the second and third quarters of 2011 included advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) smart meter deployments covering several million customers from three major utilities in North America.
Consumers Energy chose SmartSynch to help it build an AMI system for 1.8 million customers in Michigan; and in Canada, BC Hydro selected Itron to supply 1.8 million new meters over the next 2 years, while Hydro-Quebec chose Landis+Gyr to supply the bulk of the 3.75 million smart meters it plans to deploy over the next 5 years.
Pike Research’s analysis indicates that in North America, Landis+Gyr maintained its leadership position with a 25 percent share of cumulative smart meter vendor selections, Itron was in second place with 22 percent and Sensus and GE Energy were tied for third place, each holding a 16 percent share of selections as of 3Q 2011.
Pike Research’s “Smart Grid Deployment Tracker” includes a tactical examination of technologies, deployment timeframes, and vendor selections for each utility deployment, along with vendor selection share analysis. An executive summary is available for free download on the firm’s website.

Good to hear that smart meter deployments go ahead despite some users push-back....where I live (Vancouver, Canada) we all are supposed to get our meters within 2 years...hopefully it will make our energy supply network more reliable and economically viable (although we already pay the lowest electrical energy rates in the world)...Kris

9. RADIATION MEASURED FROM SMART METER MOUNTED ON A HOME (once active in the utility system) SHOWS RADIATION TRANSMISSION PULSES APPROXIMATELY ONCE EVERY FOUR SECONDS 24 HOURS PER DAY traveling through the bodies and brains of the inhabitants of that home. Youtube Video (6 minutes, 1st minute is sufficient)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRejDxBE6OE
PG$E, California’s Utility Monopoly, recently admitted that each smart meter mounted on a home transmits radiation between 10,000 and 190,000 times each day.
This admission corrected previous false statements repeated often by many utility companies across the country.
NOTE: many of the tests on non-ionizing radiation (the type of radiation emitted by smart meters) have been done using devices other than smart meters because smart meters have only been in people’s homes for a very short time.
But as a Wireless smart meter emits 100 times more radiation than a cell phone, it is not difficult to project. If a machine gun (smart meter) fires 100 bullets in the same time that a pistol (cell phone) fires one bullet, it is not difficult to project the harm that the machine gun can do, even if the tests were done with the pistol.

RobertWilliams: I'm a little baffled by your list of negatives toward this technology, mostly on the radiation watch. Is this from experience or from literature scan? It would great to hear some divergent perpectives on the subject. Anybody?

Perhaps we can have a discussion on points raised by Robert Williams...let's start with radiation damage...it is true that WHO placed wireless devices on class 2-B list but there is no solid evidence (as far as I can tell) that there is a measurable damage to human tissue and *only* slightly elevated risk of developing a cancer...this btw applies to all wireless devices, smart meters actually send very little data compared to smart phones...Kris

I think we need to do more study about electromagnetic hypersensitivity(EHS) symptoms like headache, fatigue, stress, sleep disturbances, skin symptoms like prickling, burning sensations etc.

I find the point that RobertWilliams makes about Smart meter radiation being 100 times that of a cell phone interesting. As engineers we all know that radiation obeys an inverse square law with distance. So a source with 100x the radiation that is 10x further away should have the same effect (all else being equal). So a cell phone 5cm from your brain would be the same as a smart meter at 0.5m distant. At that distance, as Kris points out, there is only a slightly elevated risk of developing cancer.
In my case, the only way I can get that close to the smart meter on my house is by standing outside right in front of it or to lean my head under or in the kitchen cabinet. Since I don't spend much,if any, time in either of those positions, I'm not going to worry about it.

It is the pulsed nature that creates the damage so low levels are also harmful. Solid evidence for harm?
See Zory Glaser's list of studies in the early 1970s: http://www.magdahavas.com/2010/02/25/introduction-to-from-zorys-archive/

We are playing Russian Roulette with public health in proliferating wireless devices of all kinds. There is MORE THAN ENOUGH evidence to employ the Precautionary Principle here folks.

To: @CZehfus, the pdf you are pointing at seems to be a very selected compilation...there must be more systematic studies of radiation effects on human tissue and organs, longer than just few pages...Kris
