Asus reveals 2012 tablet roadmap

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--Jumping the gun on CES, Asustek Computer Inc. has unveiled its tablet roadmap for 2012 at a press event in Taipei, Taiwan.
Asus vice president and GM of the Eee business unit Samson Hu said the firm would be showing off an ARM tablet running the Microsofft Windows 8 operating system at CES, with plans for the device to hit shelves by the end of 2012.
The firm also announced the 3G version of its Nvidia Corp. Tegra 3 based Transformer Prime tablet, with an improved GPS module, to be released in mid-march. The first version of the Prime was slated by reviewers for its poor GPS performance.
Asus said it would be releasing a 7-inch tablet, the Asus Memo, as well as a new 10-inch tablet with a high screen resolution, though it was unclear whether this would be a new tablet altogether, or simply a higher specced version of the Transformer Prime. Both those tablets will be on display at CES, the firm said.
Two more 10-inch tablets were announced for the latter half of 2012, though Asus would not provide any additional details on these.
The Taiwanese device maker said it expected to sell approximately six million tablets in 2012 and, in preparation, has bolstered its Android tablet unit with the addition of another 100 employees, taking the number to 400. Asus also said it had 150 developers and engineers working on Windows 8 development for tablets.

A lot of tablets hinted at or announced at 2011 CES either did not make it to market, or failed to gain much market traction.... even though 2011 was the "Year of the Tablet" according to forecasters.
There is no doubt the tablet market is here, but it will still take a great deal of effort to penetrate Apple's current market share.

Microsofft Windows 8 is expected to be one of the fastest OS ever. I am sure this will work in favour of Asus. Clearly battle between windows and android in tablet market is heating up.
