Video: HP's Prith Banerjee discusses HP labs, ARM servers and optical interconnects

2/2/2012 7:50 PM EST

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--Director of HP Labs Prith Banerjee gave his DesignCon keynote on the future of optical interconnects in the industry, including photonic interconnects and light to communicate instantaneously.

Banerjee said HP labs was dabbling in highly futuristic work, which would entail a number of research challenges.

Noting that HP was already making some of these futuristic systems manually, Banerjee said the next step was to develop the tools to be able to do make at volume.

“We need to speed things up by a factor of 10,000,” he said noting that HP had already managed to experimentally go from 10Gbs to 300 Gbs, and that further work needed to be done.

Banerjee also discussed the next generation of data center, including low power servers, which HP is using in its project Moonshot.

The challenge would be really about the processing power catching-up with the data being transferred at the rate of 300Gbs and yet consuming low power.
