Application list for Windows 8 beta released

SAN FRANCISCO-- With the “consumer preview” of Microsoft Corp.’s Windows 8 beta due to emerge over the next couple of weeks, a list of pre-installed applications available for the software has emerged.
Though the list may not be long, Microsoft betas are known to typically maintain a high quality standard, with the Redmond, Wash.-based software firm not wanting to put its reputation at stake with testers.
The applications deemed ready for public consumption at a beta level therefore include email, messaging, calendar, camera, music, video, photos, people and SkyDrive –Microsoft’s cloud application which allows users to access their files from anywhere.
Microsoft said it would also make its virtual Windows Store part of the consumer preview, to showcase its strategy for moving forward into a more digital software distribution model.
The company is also said to be including several games in the consumer preview, including the popular Angry Birds application which has become almost ubiquitous on mobile devices.
The beta will be available in the second half of February.

If anything, I find it disturbing and disconcerting that they are advertizing trivia, such as what games will come pre-loaded with Win8 Beta. Hopefully, applications which run on Win7 would for the most part also run on Win8. If this isn't true, and that's why make a big deal about something I find to be "so what," I would love to know about that.

The most pertinent information is what can be expected to run under the ARM architecture, which will be supported for Win8. I have seen elsewhere that Office 15 is among that list. Other than that, keep in mind that this is an open beta, and that many home users are interested in the games as well as (if not more than) the "serious" software.

Microsoft has actually come a long way on that issue. Win7 certainly boots up faster than XP. Put iy on an SSD and the issue almost becomes moot. Mymain Win7 machine boots up in about 7 seconds from an older SSD.

Microsoft needs to have a better pricing model for Windows in developing world. That way, people can pay and avoid the piracy which costs Microsoft fortune. It seems MST will be driving this ecosystem for long as newer versions of Windows are coming live better.

Office apps and Skypdrive are highly anticipated in any Microsoft new platform. What's more important is ease of developing apps and support of hi-end games. According to history, games drive PC technology growth. I believe it will be similar in mobile technology.

SkyDrive is definitely a key feature which will help Windows to market this version. Cloud is definitely hot technology these days and windows has done the right thing to embed Cloud into its new release.

Human lifetimes are lost waiting for Windows computers to boot. It needs to be a priority to reduce this waste. Steve Jobs appreciated the issue and demanded his software team (Steve Jobs biography by Walter Isaacson) save human lives in boot time. Although they thought it was impossible, they shaved off even more time than he asked.

SkyDrive. Recently I saw in the TV a commercial about Apple’s iCloud. Seems these two, iCloud and SkyDrive are the same but one from Apple and the other from Microsoft. It’s funny to realize that technology is above companies. The big software providers (most of the times) can’t deliver something until it has mature enough. I’ve been hearing about cloud computing for about a couple of years now and till now it seems we’ll have it everyday. In my daily use of a mobile phone and computers I have realized the need for the benefits such as being able to download in my computer and immediately and seamlessly have it on my mobile. Now both of these major companies are announcing they will provide the service, but why almost at the same time? Technology is above companies.
