SAN FRANCISCO—ON Semiconductor Corp. has expanded its operations in the Czech Republic, opening a 13,000-square-foot R&D and design facility in the town of Roznov, the company said Monday (May 21).
The center is located on ON Semi's existing campus in Roznov, in the Czech Republic's Zlín region. The campus was a legacy Motorola site that On Semi took when it spun off from Motorola in 1999. In addition to the design center, the Roznov campus features a 6-inch wafer fab, a silicon wafer production facility and business operations support teams. About 1,300 people are employed at the site, according to ON Semi.
The design center is focused on the development of energy efficient power solutions for use in televisions, notebook computers, battery chargers, white goods, and LED lighting and wireless applications, according to ON Semi. In recent times, the number of design center employees has expanded from 12 to more than 100, according to the firm.
The design center houses more than 3,000 square feet of high tech laboratories. The building was constructed with power efficient heating and cooling systems, including several innovative energy recuperation systems, according to ON Semi.
Both ON Semi and the Czech government have made financial investments in the company's R&D, manufacturing and business support operations in Roznov and nearby Brno, according to ON Semi.
"ON Semiconductor’s new Roznov Design center and all our talented teams in Roznov and Brno play a key role within the company’s global network," said Keith Jackson, president and CEO of ON Semi, in a statement. "The Roznov design team is charged with developing innovative technologies and products to improve energy usage within the myriad of electronics manufactured by our global customers."

Good to see On expanding. Just wish they could do it in the US.

Take a look at On-Semi's history of aquisition. They're very agressive about expansion. It's an eclectic list that includes some American companies but mostly it indicates that they are less concerned about location than they are about fit.
And lest we forget that Pilsner was invented in the Czech Republic.
