TI rolls high data rate CAN transceivers

SAN FRANCISCO—Texas Instruments Inc. Wednesday (May 23) introduced a family of turbo CAN transceivers designed for data rates in excess of 1 Mbps, meeting the growing demand for more nodes and greater data transmission length in today's industrial CAN networks.
The SN65HVD255 and SN65HVD256 devices offer short propagation delay and fast loop times to support higher data rates and deliver more timing margin in these systems, according to TI (Dallas). The devices provide a next-generation design path from the SN65HVD251 and SN65HVD1050 transceivers, the company said.
The SN65HVD255 and SN65HVD256 provide enhanced protection features, including transmit data dominant time-out functionality, under voltage lock-out and electrostatic discharge protection at +/-12 kV human body model to enable reliable system performance, TI said. These enhancements optimize industrial applications, such as factory and building automation, process control equipment, and motor control, the company said.
The SN65HVD255 and SN65HVD256 are available today in an 8-pin SOIC package, TI said. Suggested retail pricing is 50 cents per unit in 1,000-unit quantities, the company said. The SN65HVD255DEVM development module is available for $49 each, the company said.

I thought propagation delay is defined by distance divided by speed of light. Would it be directly proportional to the distance of travel? If the propagation delay is seen the same as the definition of delay through logic gate, it makes a bit more sense. It sounds to be like processing delay though.

I think on a cable the propagation delay is determined by the RC constant.

Propagation delay for CAN is defined by the CAN standard as the time from TXD through the driver, external to bus, back through the receiver to RXD. It is also called loop delay.
