LG Display ups HD panel for smartphones to 5 inches

MANHASSET, NY -- LG Display has introduced a 5 in. full high definition LCD panel for smartphones, which the company claims provides the same quality as on TVs and monitors.
LG Display’s panel is based on the company’s AH-IPS (Advanced High Performance In-Plane Switching) technology that enables 440ppi (pixels per inch) and 1920x1080 resolution for full HDTV quality on a smartphone.
The panel has a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio and is 0.5 inches larger, 2.2 times denser in pixels, and 1.3 times more advanced in ppi than the preceding 4.5 in. panel at 329ppi and 1280x720.
“As smartphones become increasingly valued for how well they do multimedia and with the rapid growth of LTE enabling faster large file transfers, our new 5 in. full HD LCD panel is certain to prove a significant asset to the mobile market,” said Sang-Deok Yeo, CTO and Executive Vice President of LG Display, in a statement.
LG Display’s AH-IPS’ technology provides high-density displays where the naked eye is unable to distinguish between individual pixels and its bright light transmission and low power consumption is ideal for use in outdoor settings, according to the company.
LG Display Co., Ltd. manufactures and supplies TFT-LCD panels, OLEDs and flexible displays ranging in sizes and specifications for use in TVs, monitors, notebook PCs, and mobile products. The company operates eight fabrication facilities and seven back-end assembly facilities in Korea, China, Poland and Mexico.
The new HD LCD panel is expected to be released during the second half of this year, and will be on exhibit for the first time at SID 2012 Display Week in Boston next week. A list of exhibitors can be found here.

This will a remarkable product, and will required a new name as it can not be said Tablet not a TV, not a Phone. Enclosing FullHD resolution in 5inch size is really a big achievement. LG is also doing very good in 3D Displays as well.

A 5" LCD into a phone will effectively make the size of a phone to be 5.2-5.5". It sounds to me like a tablet or a Galaxy Note. Nonetheless, achieving 440ppi is impressive. A product made of this LCD technology will surely be remarkable - A Crystal Display technology. ;)
