SAN FRANCISCO—South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. said Friday (June 1) it acquired Nanoradio AB, a Swedish developer of ultra low-power wireless LAN chipsets for mobile phones, for an undisclosed sum.
Nanoradio (Kista, Sweden) specializes in developing small form factor high performance Wi-Fi chipsets with low power consumption for cellular platforms. The firm has about 60 employees.
Samsung (Seoul, South Korea) did not disclosed any details about the transaction or its plans for Nanoradio.
Nanoradio, founded in 2004, had raised at least $73 million in venture funding, including $17 million from a group of several venture capital firms in 2010. In 2011, Nanoradio was named to Deloitte LLP's ranking of the 500 fastest growing technology companies in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, placing 37 with a listed growth rate of 2,929 percent.
In 2009, Nanoradio announced it would supply Sharp Electronics Corp. with Wi-Fi chipsets for an integrated low power Wi-Fi system in package.

These acquisitions can deliver huge profits to Samsung in the future. With Internet of Things around the corner there could be huge demand for low power smaller size WiFi solutions.

I think Samsung is following footsteps of Intel. Both the companies have huge revenue reserves and they can afford to invest in potential business opportunites.

Samsung is the only company capable of integrating all the key system components: storage, memory, logic, chipsets, packaging, display, etc. and wireless is another nice feather in its cap. But the other side to be considered is the VC influence. Looks like they wanted a quick return on their investment.

Their capabilities are huge and complementary indeed. If they carry on like this, they will leave Intel in the dust...

It is evident that we are in the season of convergence in the industry. Many firms are coming together and that is good for business. If you have a reasonable good technology in the wireless domain, the chance of being bought is now very high.

Nice Move. But nowadays the state of the art radio chipsets(from TI/BCom/CSR/Qcomm) integrates WiFi/Bluetooth/GPS/FM on a single die. Just WiFi alone wont cut it IMO.

There are "planned" applications of wi-fi only modules for internet enabled aparatus, from remote sensing cameras to home lighting systems to smart washing machines.

Interesting move, I wonder what else they are looking at acquiring? I like the addition to Samsung and look forward to the products that result from this purchase. I wonder if they are looking to expand into handheld wireless cloud computing?
