LONDON – Engineers with experience in the consumer electronics and semiconductor sectors and who are prepared to continue their careers in Singapore could benefit from the first ever online recruitment event being organized by Contact Singapore.

The event takes place online between August 20 to August 22 and registered attendees will be able to chat with managers and recruitment representatives from companies in Singapore including: Broadcom, Infineon Technologies, Intel, Lantiq and Micron Technology.

Contact Singapore, an alliance between the Singapore Economic Development Board and city state's Ministry of Manpower, is an agency set up to try and draw overseas Singaporeans back and to encourage talented professionals to come and work there.

"Electronics is the bedrock of Singapore's manufacturing activities, contributing 30 percent to the nation’s manufacturing output," the organizers said. "We are looking out for top engineering talent to advance technology and innovation in Singapore," it added.

Registration for the event can be found at: www.contactsingapore.sg/electronicsVCF2012

Information on working and living in Singapore can be found at: www.contactsingapore.com

Singapore is also a good place for IC design as far there are still many MNCs. Does it mean the simple online interview indeed is replacing the tedious immigration interview?

"Singapore is also a good place for IC design as far there are still many MNCs."

I am sorry to say that you are totally misguided. The truth is there are not many jobs in IC design(http://www.jobstreet.com.sg/) and the salaries suck compared to US/Europe. A fresh BS/MS EE in IC design will get ~3-4KS$ and after paying the rent/housing you will be left out with 1-2KS$ to live. The only good thing is that the taxes are low compared to US. But for jobs in finance/banking SG is a great place.

And BTW, you cant afford to buy a car in Singapore. A 20KUS$ car costs around 150K S$ in Singapore (I am not joking!) http://www.sgcarmart.com/new_cars/newcars_overview.php?CarCode=11105

Public transport is quiet efficient though!

And as you are living on an island with good public transport why would you want a car. So that is US$20k saved.

Public transport sucks because you have to follow their timetable if you want to catch a bus or train. If you have a car you are to travel yourself as per your own convinenance.

the same is true of Europe (Germany, Netherlands etc) where there are manufacturing and related jobs are available. The pays are not high post tax as compare to US but enough to live a good life and post retirement benefits.

You must live until you retire. If somebody die before retirement are they going to re-imburse his money he paid for retirement benefits?

My experience was different. Got a Analog IC design job right after I graduated with a BEng only! Many of my classmates also got IC design related jobs fresh out of school. Yes, initial salary is on the low side if you compare to US (but which country isn't on the low side compared with the US :) ). Pay rise is good if you perform well though.

You are living in Asia where labor is cheap, therefore dont expect a big paycheck until you are a rocket scientist.

One good thing about Singapore is that it is much safer to live in Singapore as the law breakers face heavy punishment .

My daughter worked there for 1 year and found it the safest place to work, live, travel for single women

Singapore is an artificially controlled society. Freedom (entrepreneurial and social) is severly curtailed. Everything in singapore is based on a master plan. I know if may folks from neighboring countries who did see Singapore as a step up initially but were anxious to get out in a few years.

Many of my high school classmates are entrepreneurs! (I'm about 27 now) I initially thought the same as you, Mike. But after seeing what my friends are doing, I beg to differ.

Considering the rampant corruption and lawlessness in many other countries, there is hardly any society that is not artificially controlled to a large extent. Perhaps Singapore does not promote as wide an income disparity as many other countries but that is good for the majority. Yes, after the initial step up the greedy, without sense of gratitude, would sure want to get out.

Another thing to consider when working Singapore is the education system for your kids (if any) I think Singapore has a very rigorous education system from Primary 1 all the way to Junior College (7-18 years old). Stressful? yes. But it will prepare you for what is to come at the top universities.

I'm an electrical engineering Singaporean who left Singapore to work overseas a couple of years ago. My experience is in consumer electronics circuit design. The reason I left is because employers don't value workers over 40 years of age. The retirement age in Singapore is 55. You are considered over the hill, worn out, when you are past 50. I'm 54. I see myself as having many years more of effective working life as an engineer but the employers in Singapore think otherwise.

Thanks to all for comments but particularly to Singaporeans such as Merlionct and Caesar148, who help drive an informed debate.

A lot of us are comparing job here with job elsewhere with job in Singapore.

BUT for some people the choice is no job here/there versus job in Singapore.

OR job out of electronics here/there with job in electronics in Singapore.

At least firms are showing signs of hiring in Singapore.
