UMC's June sales move into annual growth

7/9/2012 6:21 AM EDT

LONDON – Foundry United Microelectronics Corp. has announced sales for June of NT$9,289 million (about $310 million) up 1.1 percent on the same figure in 2011 and up 0.9 percent on the sale in May 2012. June's sales result was UMC's first monthly sales figure to be ahead of its equivalent in 2011.

The sales round out a solid quarter for UMC as it has been rebuilding wafer fab utilization during the quarter from an average of 71 percent in the first quarter.

The second quarter's sales were NT$27,620 (about $923 million) up 16.2 percent on the first quarter sales of NT$23,765 (about $795 million). This sequential increase is larger than is seasonally usual. UMC had said it expected wafer shipments to increase 15 percent in the second quarter on flat average selling prices.

The aggregate sales for the first half of the year were NT$51,385 million (about $1.72 billion) down 8.7 percent on the first half of 2011.

This shows that building fabs with high cost is not taking to take your valuation anywhere high. I do not know why this is a solid quarter as the article noted when they are losing markets.
