LONDON – PragmatIC Printing Ltd. (Cambridge, England), a developer of printed electronic technology, has announced it has licensed Illinois Tool Works Inc., an $18 billion diversified industrial manufacturer, to use its printed electronics technology. ITW is also set to collaborate with PragmatIC's pilot production program, known as P4.

Under the agreement ITW Foils and Thermal Films Group, a maker of a variety of secure, functional, and decorative films, coatings, and foils for a wide array of customers, will make use of the license to develop and sell printed electronics. ITW provides materials, foils and layers for secure document programs, credit cards, and major consumer goods brands.

ITW plans to combine PragmatIC's printed electronics with other decorative and security features such as holographic metallic foils, enabling such devices to become interactive and challenge-and-response based, PragmatIC said.

"This relationship strongly complements our other P4 partnerships, and we look forward to working closely with them to establish and scale the entire value chain for complete printed electronics solutions," said Scott White, CEO of PragmatIC Printing, in a statement.

"The P4 initiative ensures that it is not just an isolated technology, but rather part of a complete ecosystem enabling commercially viable solutions to be rolled out in the near future," John Schneider, vice president of technology for the ITW foils and film business unit, in the same statement.
