surprising to see motorola on number 9 and of course blackberry/RIM at last position.

I'm actually not surprised to see Motorola and RIM at the bottom. I have a Motorola phone and it's only usable because I've turned off all of the extra "MotoBlur" crap that they install on it, attempting to improve the experience.

As for RIM, they have sadly lost their way. Unless they can re-think their demographic and strategy, they are going to be gone in a few years. The move to BB10 has been a hard one, and alienated a lot of users and developers.

Interesting to see ZTE, Huawei, and TCL in the mid-range. I wonder if they are going to try and expand into the North American markets...

oh! That is a pleasant surprise. Nokia is still holding onto number 2 position ahead of Apple.

How about just the smart phone shipments?

It is surprising that Nokia is still number 2. As the market continues to move to smart phones, this ranking will change. Will Apple continue to grow or will Samsung squash them out?

The way things are consolidating, RIM may soon find itself as a skeletal remains of its former self. But things don't look too rosy for others, many handset makers are going thru losses, ZTE just announced their biggest loss. Those that sell in predominantly Asian markets seem to be more exposed than others who sell in diversified geographies. The handset makers need to negotiate sustainable and profitable business models with carriers.
