SAN FRANCISCO—Qualcomm Inc. said Thursday (Aug. 23) it acquired Israeli basestation system-on-chip (SoC) and software vendor DesignArt Networks Ltd. for an undisclosed sum.

According to the English language version of Israeli business daily Globes, the deal is believed to be worth between $120 million and $140 million.

DesignArt Networks, based in Based in Ra'anana, Israel, offers SoCs and software that enable the design of indoor and outdoor small cell base stations and remote radio heads. The company's technology also offers integrated line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight wireless backhaul to reduce the cost of outdoor small cell deployments, according to Qualcomm (San Diego).

"DesignArt and its products will both enhance and accelerate our initiatives to drive increased capacity and coverage in mobile networks," said Craig Barratt, president of Qualcomm Atheros, in a statement. "Operators can significantly improve user experience across residential, enterprise and outdoor networks given the greater network efficiencies derived by implementing small cells and heterogeneous networks."

Qualcomm acquired Atheros Communications Inc. for $3.1 billion last year.

There are a lot of successful Israeli startup companies. Acquisition news of them happens quite often. What's the position of US innovation? Will Israeli become the next innovation hub?
