Western Digital back on top of hard disk drive heap

SAN FRANCISCO—Western Digital Corp. regained the top spot among hard disk drive (HDD) suppliers in the second quarter, six months after falling behind rival Seagate Technology Corp. in the wake of flooding in Thailand that forced several facility closures, market research firm IHS iSuppli said Tuesday (Aug. 28).
Western Digital produced about 71 million HDD units in the second quarter, generating record revenue for the company of about $4.8 billion, according to a market brief from IHS. Western Digital's production for the second quarter includes production from Hitachi GST, which Western Digital acquired earlier this year, IHS said.
Meanwhile, Seagate shipped about 65.9 million HDD units in the second quarter, IHS said. Seagate also generated a company record $4.5 billion in sales, according to IHS.
Fang Zhang, an analyst for storage systems at IHS, said through a statement that Western Digital has now fully recovered from the impact of the Thai flooding, which damaged the company's HDD manufacturing facility. Western Digital was able to increase its HDD shipment for notebook PCs by 28 percent in the second quarter compared to the first, Zhang said.
"Western Digital is on track to retain the top spot in shipments and revenue for the third quarter," Zhang said.
Total HDD shipments for the second quarter amounted to 157 million units, up 8 percent from the first quarter, according to IHS. Total HDD revenue for the second quarter hit $10.3 billion, up from $9.6 billion in the first quarter, IHS said.

They seem to have similar sales and gross margins which implies that they have too many similarities in their assembly lines.. maybe time for another disruption to shake things up a bit here.
