Less is not more
IHS said it expects the percentage of DRAM used in PCs to contract by another 6 percent by the end of 2013.
Meanwhile, the firm expects the percentage of DRAM going to media tablets and smart phones to continue to rise. IHS said it expects the percentage of DRAM going to tablets to grow from 1.6 percent in the first quarter of this year to 6.9 percent by the fourth quarter of 2013. Cell phones are expected to account for 19.8 percent of DRAM bits in the fourth quarter of 2013, up nearly 7 points from 13.2 percent in the second quarter of this year, IHS said.

By the end of 2013, IHS expects tablets and cell phones combined to account for 26.7 percent of DRAM bits, nearly double the 14.1 percent they accounted for at the beginning of this year.
Though the decline of PCs in DRAM share appears to be irreversible, IHS stressed that PCs are expected to remain the largest single consumer of DRAM through at least the fourth quarter of 2013. DRAM bit shipments for PCs will continue to grow overall, the firm said.
