Qualcomm joins AMD's HSA club

SAN FRANCISCO—Qualcomm Inc. Wednesday (Oct. 3) joined the Heterogeneous System Architecture (HSA) Foundation, the organization created by Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) in June to define and promote an open, standards-based approach to heterogeneous computing.
Qualcomm (San Diego) joins the HSA Foundation as a founding member. Other founding members of the HSA Foundation include AMD, ARM, Imagination Technologies, Mediatek Inc., Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Texas Instruments Inc.

“Future Snapdragon processors from Qualcomm will contain substantially more computing performance and integrated parallel processing technology in order to meet the high performance, low power needs of our mobile customers,” said Jim Thompson, senior vice president of engineering at Qualcomm, in a statement.
Thompson said Qualcomm joined the HSA Foundation to help define open standards around heterogeneous computing because the company developers will be able to deliver faster and more innovative applications on future Snapdragon processors if certain aspects of heterogeneous computing are standardized.
The HSA Foundation was launched by AMD at its Fusion Developer Conference in June. The organization's stated goal is to provide a common hardware specification and support to make it easier for software developers to take multiprocessing advantage of modern complex processors. The launch of the HSA Foundation followed AMD's announcement a year earlier that it was opening up its Fusion Architecture, later re-named HSA.
Since its formation, the HSA Foundation has more than doubled its membership, according to the organization. The organization delivered a technical presentation at the recent IEEE International Conference on Computer Design and plans to deliver another at the 2012 ARM TechCon, which opens Oct. 30.
