LONDON – The sheer scale of Electronica, Germany's biennial showcase for electronic components, systems and applications, usually means attendees have little trouble working up a thirst for Munich's stellar beers while trying to cover 16 exhibition halls. Indeed, Munich's Messe was built on former airport runways.
The theme for Electronica 2012, which runs from Nov. 13-16, is "Inside Tomorrow," an appropriate reference to the rise of embedded systems and machine-to-machine communications. What is less well-known is that the exhibition also includes multiple conferences and presentation forums.
According to the organizer, more than 2,500 exhibitors from 45 countries and over 70,000 attendees showed up for Electronica in 2010, making it one of the largest international electronics events. Electronica attracts leading semiconductor companies as well as specialists in passive components, sensors, connectors and pc boards. The chip companies tend to be the broad, multimarket suppliers and distributors who play an increasingly significant role in the global technology supply chain.
This year's Electronica will focus on mobility, energy efficiency and sustainability along with a broad range of applications from automotive and industrial to more general embedded applications to wireless and medical electronics.
Co-located exhibitions include: Hybridica, which looks at components and packaging based on a mix of thin- and thick-film processing; and a trade fair on energy storage.

Larger than most airports and served by two subway stations, the Munich Messe fairgrounds on the east side of the city is huge.
