Still no takers for idled ProMOS DRAM fab

SAN FRANCISCO—A Taiwanese-government backed firm plans to try again to sell ProMOS Technologies Inc.'s idled DRAM fab next month after an initial deadline for offers passed without any bids, the Reuters news service reported Thursday (Nov. 29).

The Taiwan Financial Asset Service Corp. a semi-government body in charge of the auction of the fab on behalf of creditors, will continue to offer the 300-mm fab through auction at a base price of about $660 million, Reuters reported.

The initial deadline for bids passed on Thursday without any activity, Reuters reported.

According to Reuters, foundries Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC), United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) and Globalfoundries Inc. have all been linked to interest in the fab. The report quoted a spokesperson for ProMOS creditors saying that two unnamed companies from outside Taiwan visited the fab but did not have sufficient time to prepare bidding documents.

ProMOS halted production last year amid failed debt obligation and a downturn in the global DRAM market.
