Samsung proceeding to expand Austin fab

MANHASSET, N.Y. -- Samsung is proceeding with its investment of $4 billion at its Austin, Texas, site to expand production of mobile application processors beginning the second half of 2013.
The remodeled facility will produce mobile application processors on 300-mm wafers at the 28-nm process node. The boost in production will occur during the second half of 2013 and is expected to alleviate the rapidly growing demand for application processors for mobile devices.
Samsung also said it is expanding its Austin Research Center, which now employs about 200 engineers designing mobile application processors.
Samsung’s campus in Austin currently employs 2,500 workers.
Samsung claims its investment in Austin is the largest foreign investment in the state of Texas. The Korean electronics giant's total investment in Samsung Austin Semiconductor since 1996 will reach $11 billion by year’s end, including the $4 billion investment announced in August.

Probably not a short term investment. By the article, $11 billion total (including the recent $4 billion announcement) from 1996 - 2012. Let's take away the recently announced funds and we have $7 billion spent from 1996 - 2012. My educated guess is the fastest burn rate is about 4-5 years to spend the $4 billion.

It's nice to see Korea investing, once again, in the USA. Meanwhile, Apple is moving it's business to TSMC (China). Can it be that Samsung's tablets and phones are more "American" than Apple tablets and phones?
