PORTLAND, Ore. — STMicroelectronics has partnered with Movea to add motion-awareness to ST's Orly set-top box system-on-chip. Integrating Movea's SmartMotion Server into Orly will permit designers to add motion awareness into set-top boxes and enable users to control their TVs using gestures. The melding should increase the utility of video-on-demand (VoD) and online gaming services.
"Our collaboration with Movea will enable set-top boxes based on ST's system-on-chips to deliver high-value applications and services," said Andre Bertrand, technical and strategic marketing director at ST. "Consumers increasing desire for more natural user interfaces is propelling these motion-sensing technologies."
Movea's SmartMotion Server can be seen integrated together in the Orly set-top box in ST's booth at the China Content Broadcasting Network Exhibition (CCBN, Beijing, March 21-23, 2013).
Movea's SmartMotion Server provides gesture-recognition capabilities for web surfing, VoD cataloging, social media navigation, gaming and media-center management. Using point-and-click navigation, instead of directional push-buttons, allows set-top box subscribers to scroll, swipe and select more naturally. Gaming is also enhanced by allowing the user to harness MEMS sensors in the remote to control on-screen action in a manner similar to gaming consoles.

I just want to be a fly on the wall when the first sets are deployed during a championship game. As the wild fans scream, cheer, and wave their arms, the TV set will switch channels, mute the sound, and turn off the DVR. As the shouts turn from the game to the device, their angry shouts and gestures at the device will further confound the situation.
