If you want to know just how broken the patent system is, just look at patent D670,713, filed by Apple and approved this week by the United States Patent Office.
This design patent, titled, “Display screen or portion thereof with animated graphical user interface,” gives Apple the exclusive rights to the page turn in an e-reader application.
Yes, that’s right. Apple now owns the page turn. You know, as when you turn a page with your hand. An “interface” that has been around for hundreds of years in physical form. I swear I’ve seen similar animation in Disney or Warner Brothers cartoons.

This totally proves how broken our patenting system is. Page turn is a normal feature and no body has the right to patent it. Apple is using its extra cash to patent everything possible. I really hope some law will be passed to stop such kind of mis-use of money.

One basic requirement for a patent is that the invention be "non-obvious". Without seeing the detailed claims of this patent this does not meet this basic criteria.
I doubt if Apple could succesfully defend this patent in a court - they would risk this patent being overturned.

No, this is not BS. It's trolling by the publication to entrap folks like the other commenters into responding without first informing themselves.
Shame on UBM and EETimes for publishing this in such an inflammatory fashion and shame on the responders for responding out of ignorance.
First, if you look at the patent, two pages of prior art are listed. That means there are probably 75 ways of implementing a page-turn that are NOT covered by this patent. It is a design patent which must be interpreted narrowly--no way to stretch it.
Second, if you look at the drawing, you will see that it is a very specific page-turn, similar to tearing a sheet from a notepad. It's NOT folding a sheet over in a bound folio. It's NOT flipping a sheet over the top of a spiral steno notebook, NOR is it flipping a sheet over in a side-bound spiral notebook or in a side-bound three-ring binder.

Shame on Apple for applying for it and the zombies that help them to amass a fortune to spend on stupidity like this.
