Automotive intelligence opens the throttle on the era of anytime, anywhere connectivity. Whether the emphasis is on disruptive technologies like electric cars or the evolution of the internal-combustion models that still rule the road, the connected-car movement aims to make vehicles—and their drivers—safer, more efficient and more comfortable by linking transportation data systems and individual vehicles with mobile consumer devices. The pushpins on the industry's road map lead to an in-car environment that increasingly mimics the media-rich connected home. We report on the progress, and point out the speed bumps, in our special all-digital edition.

Engineers are beginning to unlock the holy grail of creating an in car sound system that boasts improved acoustics and sound quality. What I fear that is with that much sound quality, the driver might become distracted by the music and not notice someone honking at them during an emergency. Are my fears unfounded? We need an insurance against such accidents from happening.
