Integrated Device Technology has announced what the company claims to be the world's first crystal free piezoelectric MEMS (pMEMS) LVDS / LVPECL oscillators for high-performance communications, consumer, cloud, and industrial applications.

The new oscillators operate with substantially less than one picosecond of phase jitter in compact industry-standard packaging, making them an ideal replacement for traditional six-pin crystal oscillators (XOs). The IDT 4M series high-performance LVDS / LVPECL oscillators leverage IDT’s patented CrystalFree pMEMS resonator technology, enabling IDT to rapidly factory-program the desired output frequency without the need to fine-tune expensive crystals. In addition, because the nominal resonator frequency of pMEMS is much higher than quartz crystal, 4M oscillators are able to achieve higher frequencies at lower cost without sacrificing critical performance. The 4M series is the first of a broad portfolio of MEMS-based devices from IDT that will provide customers with convenient, accurate, low-jitter timing references.

The IDT 4M oscillators operate with ±50 ppm frequency accuracy over the wide industrial temperature range of -40 to +85°C. The devices support low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) and low-voltage positive emitter-coupled logic (LVPECL) at frequencies of up to 625 MHz, meeting the stringent requirements of most communications, networking and high-performance computing applications. In addition to 7.0x5.0mm (7050) sizes, the pMEMS oscillators are available in 5.0x3.2mm (5032) standard plastic packages to save cost and minimize the application footprint in densely populated enclosures. By design, they are pin-to-pin compatible with traditional XOs, making them an ideal upgrade replacement solution.

pMEMS is a quartz crystal free oscillator. The company says this is more reliable and lower cost compared to the quartz based oscillators. They also provide a evaluation board to test these components easily. They are seeming to even provide few thousand numbers of custom specified frequencies.

It is a big step to change the heartbeat of your system. These use a piezo resonator fabricated at MEMs level, not quite the same as a quartz crystal.

But if it delivers, expect to see it built into SoCs.

I'm still waiting for MCUs and oscillator manufacturers to implement a differential interface for low EMI. Now pin count isn't so critical there's no excuse
