Freescale Semiconductor has announced the Symphony Studio software and Symphony SoundBite development kit for developers using the company's Symphony audio digital processors. The Symphony Studio development tools support the entire Symphony audio DSP family while the SoundBite kit is offered as providing a user-friendly, very low-cost entry point into high-end DSP solutions.

Based on the extensible open-source development platform Eclipse, Symphony Studio allows DSP users to develop, debug and simulate through an Integrated Development Environment (IDE). The IDE allows code creation and editing as well as project management, debugging and code compilation all in one software suite. It can be downloaded at www.freescale.com/symphonystudio.

The Symphony SoundBite development kit is designed for cost-sensitive applications, independent design houses, small development shops and college laboratories. It ships with the Symphony DSPB56371 DSP on a small-form-factor PCB with a 256-KB serial (I2C) EEPROM memory, mini USB interface and DIP switches for user inputs.

The kit is capable of simultaneously processing eight independent channels of line-level audio via four pairs of 3.5-mm stereo jacks. One input/output pair of jacks is shared with the AKM S/PDIF receiver and transmitter, enabling optical digital audio input and output. The analog processing is handled by four AKM 24-bit stereo codecs at sampling rates up to 192 kHz.

The kit includes the Symphony SoundBite evaluation board, a mini USB cable and a CD-ROM with all necessary software and documentation. The Symphony SoundBite Development Kit is available for purchase on the company's website for $150.
