Edinburgh, UK—Wolfson Microelectronics plc has started to sample what it claims is the industry’s first commercially available digital ambient noise canceling (ANC) ASIC

The WM2002 stereo headphone driver employs the company’s proprietary myZone digital ambient noise cancellation (ANC) technology, enabling electronics manufacturers to provide consumers with cost-effective, mass market, noise canceling headphones and headsets, according to Wolfson.

Key highlights:

·         >30dB (peak), 25dB (typical) ambient noise reduction

·          Wide noise cancellation bandwidth (40Hz to 4kHz)

·          Audio inputs

-          Up to 10 analog or digital microphones

-          Single-ended or differential analog microphone input

-          2 single-ended or 1 differential line input per channel

·         Headphone driver (LDO4VOUT = 1.8V)
-  45mW per channel into 16W load
-  22mW per channel into 32W load
-  Single-ended or differential (BTL) drive configuration
-  -80dB THD+N for differential (BTL) drive

The WM2002 provides integrated power management, consisting of a DC-DC converter, charge pump and LDO regulators. The entire device can be powered from a single cell AAA battery, two AAA cells, or from an external regulated supply.

I hope this brings down the cost of those amazing headphones. It would be great if this technology becomes pervasive for the consumer. It has been high end only for too long..
