Server-class OpenVPX blade based on Intel Xeon processor E5-2648L

Mercury Computer Systems Inc. has introduced the HDS6601, a high-density server signal and data processing engine harnessing two of the latest generations of server-class Sandy Bridge octal-core Intel Xeon processors, for demanding applications.

Mercury claimed that its server-class HDS6601 demonstrates levels of performance for both large and small 6U OpenVPX systems. Small subsystems are configured with one or two HDS6601 modules for up to 32 cores. Larger systems of up to 10 HDS6601 modules can be configured with up to 160 cores.
To meet extreme computing needs, larger systems can be augmented with multiple Mercury GPGPU modules and high-performance switch modules to fill a standard 19" rack mountable OpenVPX chassis.
Utilizing the new Intel Xeon processor E5-2648L with Intel Advanced Vector Extensions (Intel AVX), the HDS6601 is a 16-core Intel architecture-based module, configured as an easy-to-program symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) cluster. It delivers nearly half a teraflop in a single standard OpenVPX slot.
For applications that require the fastest inter-core communications, such as radar beam-forming, the two 8-core Intel Xeon processors E5-2648L are connected with two link pairs of the Intel QuickPath Interconnect (Intel QPI) Bus.
Main features:
• 6U OpenVPX compliant
• Two octal-core Sandy Bridge server-class Intel processors provide 16 cores at 1.8 GHz
• Total of 460 GFLOPS peak in a single slot
• Serial RapidIO and/or 10 Gigabit Ethernet fabric enabled
• Up to 32 GB of DDR3-1600 SDRAM with 102 GB/sec peak performance
• Integrated PCI Express infrastructure for co-processing and I/O expansion plane communications
• Multiple I/O options, including Gigabit Ethernet, RS-232, RS-242, GPIO, and SATA
• Advanced system management subsystem
• Mercury MultiCore Plus software infrastructure support
Applications:
High-end embedded real-time applications.
Availability:
The HDS6601 is available now and can be configured in air-cooled or conduction-cooled rugged versions.
