PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y., Dec. 3, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The Verizon Foundation has awarded the Jacob Burns Film Center (JBFC) a $50,000 grant that will significantly enhance several existing education programs through the integration of iPads in underserved schools in Westchester County and at the JBFC Media Arts Lab in Pleasantville. The grant will further the JBFC's mission and Verizon's commitment to change the way teachers teach and students learn by innovatively integrating technology into the classroom to enhance student learning.

The grant will serve approximately 520 students and 30 teachers during the 2012-2013 school year. Three education programs will benefit from the grant: MINDS IN MOTION for fourth graders, DIGITAL STORYTELLING for teens and young adults, and REEL CHANGE for teens. Specifically, the funds will be used to purchase iPads for curriculum expansion and development, along with equipment accessories, and to help fund faculty and staff salaries, professional development and volunteer training.
MINDS IN MOTION is an interdisciplinary education program taught in elementary schools that gives students the opportunity to write, storyboard, direct, and produce a stop-motion animated film. The 12-week course culminates with a Red Carpet Premiere at the JBFC Theater, where students will have the thrill of seeing their films on a big screen, surrounded by an audience of family and friends. DIGITAL STORYTELLING focuses on creating multiscreen projects, installations, video sculptures and interactive design. REEL CHANGE is a multimedia program where students have the opportunity to raise their awareness and effect change by producing a short film that expresses a point of view about social issues.
