Intersil today announced an aggressive new expansion into video applications with three new products to speed video transmission over coaxial and CAT 5 cabling.

The Intersil Techwell Security Link over Coax (SLOC) devices are composed of the TW3801 camera modem PHY and the TW3811 receiver modem PHY. The SLOC devices are a new product family for Intersil, coming in the wake of the company’s springtime acquisition of Techwell, a fabless company mixed-signal video IC provider (including quad muxes, quad decoders and PCI/PCIe decoders).

The second product thrust is the Intersil MegaQ adaptive composite video equalizer, the ISL59601/2/3/4/5.

SLOC modems
The SLOC modem solution is designed to simultaneously transmit analog CVBS (Composite Video, Blanking, and Sync) video and digital IP video over a single coaxial cable. The benefit of the solution is to enable companies to install newer, megapixel ip cameras without having to replace or modify their existing coax infrastructure.

Since the solution allows for latency-free viewing and controlling of cameras, system makers can build systems that support both latency-free closed-circuit TV and networked ip surveillance.

Key features of the TW3801 camera modem phy:
  • Simultaneous transmission of analog CVBS video & digital IP data over along coaxial cable (up to 500m)
  • Integrated PLL with 25MHz XTAL
  • 1.8V, 3.3V supply
  • Full-duplex digital communications
    • Downlink throughput up to 36Mbps (from camera to receiver)
    • Uplink throughput up to 11Mbps (from receiver to camera)
  • Ethernet MAC MII interface for interfacing to camera processor DSP/SoC
  • Optional Ethernet PHY MII interface for interfacing to external Ethernet PHY chip
  • 2-wire control interface

Key features of the TW3811 receiver modem phy:
  • Simultaneous transmission of analog CVBS video & digital IP data over a long coaxial cable (up to 500m)
  • Full-duplex digital communications
    • Downlink throughput up to 36Mbps (from camera to receiver)
    • Uplink throughput up to 11Mbps (from receiver to camera)
  • Proprietary SLOC-based IP camera detection
  • Ethernet MAC MII interface for interfacing to DVR/NVR network processor SoC
  • 2-wire control interface
  • Integrated PLL with 25MHz XTAL interface
  • 1.8V, 3.3V supply

Availability: TW3801 and the TW3811 are available in engineering samples in the 100-TQFP (12x12mm) package. Mass production samples are slated for Q1 2011.

Pricing: $35 each in 1,000-piece quantities.

MegaQ
The MegaQ device family is designed to automatically equalize video over both Cat 5 and xoax and deliver excellent video quality at distances of 1 mile, or five times the distances currently possible.

This achievement eliminates the current need for repeaters and distribution hubs along broad swaths of cabling. The ISL59605 compensates for high-frequency cable loss up to 60dB at 5MHz and source amplitude variations up to ±3dB.

Key features:
  • Receive-side-only solution
  • Single-chip solution for fully automatic equalization
  • Continuous mode adjusts for any variations in the system (such as temperature)
  • Equalizers require a single +5V supply and consume 500mW
  • Monitors and compensates for long-term cable degradation

Availability: The ISL59601, ISL59602, ISL56903, ISL59604, and ISL59605 are sampling now in compact 4x4 20-lead QFN packages.

Nice and revolutionaly design, this is one of the good application of extending video signal over CAT5 or CAT6 or UTP cable.
This application will be proven good in domestic wirings as well.
