Sharp Microelectronics of the Americas (SMA) unveiled two LED product families recently, the Double Dome and the Mini Zenigata. The families offer a range of features, sizes, and outputs to match the needs of demanding lighting applications. The products combine a blue LED die with a proprietary mixture of green and red phosphors to achieve high reliability and low heat dissipation.

The Double Dome delivers up to 54 lm in a 2.8- by 2.8-mm package. These LEDs offer CRI performance that exceeds most fluorescent solutions, while also maintaining competitive efficacy and cost-per-lumen performance. Suitable applications include indoor and outdoor lighting; architectural illumination; and channel letter solutions.

The Mini Zenigata LEDs require about half (56%) the surface area of previous models and offer a reduction in the emissive area when compared to the company's Zenigata offering. Mini Zenigata modules offer chromaticity performance tighter than that defined by existing ANSI CCT standards (under 3 Macadam ellipse). In addition, the modules attach directly to a heat sink and “drop-in” easily into lighting fixtures and equipment due to their small footprint.

A Mini Zenigata module fitted into an MR-16 fixture (multi-faceted reflector, silver background) creates a high-intensity light suited for showcases, rail lights, task lights, and similar applications. Modules operate at 3.6 or 6.7 W.

I can't wait for LEDs to take over most of my lighting needs. Seems like the average consumer isn't switching over as fast as I would like. What is holding them up?
