Crystal growth platform yields large-area sapphire windows

We know the company as a provider of sapphire substrates and products for LED, semiconductor and optical industry use. The Large-Area-Net-shape Crystal Extraction (LANCE) project at Rubicon Technology, funded by a grant from the Air Force Research Lab worth $4.7 million, produced large-area sapphire windows of optical quality for military and industrial sensing applications.

The new growth platform produces very large polished sapphire infrared (IR) windows that will be scaled to meet Air Force requirements. Sapphire provides hardness and strength in the visible and IR spectrum, thermal conductivity, thermal shock resistance, abrasion resistance, high melting point and chemical inertness. Rubicon expects to grow panels two inches thick.
