Rochester Electronics, a manufacturer of mature semiconductors, has created a lead-free version of the AM188EM microprocessor.

“We are authorized to create and manufacture lead-free versions of previously discontinued products,” said George Karalias, Director of Marketing and Communications for Rochester Electronics, in a statement.

Originally manufactured by AMD, Rochester’s AM188EM is a higher-performance, more integrated version of the 80C188 microprocessor with enhanced on-chip peripherals.

The AM188EM include an asynchronous serial port, 32 PIOs, a watchdog timer, an additional interrupt pin, a synchronous serial interface, a PSRAM controller, a 16-bit reset configuration register, and enhanced chip-select functionality.

Rochester claims that by manufacturing the AM188EM in a lead free package, customers are able to comply with today’s more strict environmental requirements while still utilizing AMD’s proven technology in a wide range of applications, such as disk drives, fax machines, printers, modems, and industrial controls.

Rochester Electronics (Newburyport, MA) acquires remaining finished devices, wafer/die, and available intellectual property to manufacture the exact same device in any quantity and for as long as needed. The company is certified to ISO-9001:2008 and QML MIL-PRF-38535, as well as AS9120.
