Atmel rolls rad-hard reconfigurable aerospace processor

PARIS – Atmel Corp. announced it has expanded its SPARC V8 processor family with the introduction of the ATF697FF radiation-hardened high-performance aerospace microprocessor.

The ATF697FF is a multichip module integrating the Atmel AT697F SPARC V8 rad-hard processor, the Atmel ATF280F SRAM-based FPGA and an internal PCI link. With this MCM solution approach, Atmel claimed that engineers can reduce overall system cost and save space on the printed circuit board

.

The two dies are suitable for space applications by implementing hardened cells, on-chip concurrent transient and permanent error detection and correction, and permanent self-integrity check mechanism. The ATF697FF is meant to be used as a building block in computers for on-board embedded real-time applications. It brings up-to-date functionality and performance for space applications. The module only requires memory and application-specific peripherals to be added to form a complete on-board computer.

Both the processor unit and the reconfigurable unit are manufactured using the Atmel 0.18μm rad-hard AT58KRHA CMOS technology.

Atmel said the ATF697FF was designed and developed by the Atmel Aerospace Business Unit here in Rousset, France. It is expected to be available for prototyping in July and for flight model implementation at the end of 2012.
