Analog Devices is redefining accuracy in nasty conditions with an addition to its MEMS gyroscope family, the ADXRS453 iMEMS gyroscope.

The ADXRS453 is designed to deliver highly accurate outputs in applications with intense noise and vibration, such as unmanned aerial vehicles, military land and sea vehicles and avionics equipment. Shock and vibration can induce older gyroscopes to render errors.

Key features:
  • Ultra-high vibration rejection of 0.01°/s/g provides very accurate angular rate measurements
  • Vibration rectification of only 0.0002 °/sec/g2
  • ±300°/sec angular rate sensing
  • 16°/hr null offset stability virtually eliminates drift for greater accuracy
  • 2000-g powered shock survivability delivers greater reliability
  • -40° C to +125° C operation.

The key to the device’s utility is ADI’s differential Quad-Sensor design, which rejects linear and angular acceleration, including external g-forces and vibration. The design mechanically couples the four sensing structures such that external g-forces appear as common-mode signals that can be removed by the fully differential architecture implemented.

Angular rate data is presented as a 16-bit word within a 32-bit serial peripheral interface (SPI) message.

The ADXRS453 uses an internal, continuous self-test architecture in which the integrity of the electromechanical system is checked by applying a high frequency electrostatic force to the sense structure to generate a rate signal that can be differentiated from the baseband rate data and internally analyzed.

The device is packaged in a cavity plastic SOIC-16 (in this case the ADXRS453 a Z-axis angular rate) or an SMT-compatible vertical mount package (the vertical mount package orients the device such that it can sense pitch or roll angular rate on the same PCB).

Availability: Sampling now; production scheduled for December.

Pricing: In 1,000-unit volumes, $48.24 per unit (SOIC-16) and $62.29 per unit (vertical mount).

This is a very good chip, and it helps to eliminate the vibrating conditions error as a result of signal processing. Mirochip also manufactures Mems Gyroscope.
