The company has signed a licensing agreement with Shure Inc, a leading microphone manufacturer allowing them to implement apt-X Live in their new digital wireless microphones.
The new algorithm retains the performance of apt-X with coding delay under 2ms and pro-grade audio quality. The real innovation relates to the fact that this is achieved with greater compression and bandwidth efficiency The increased channel density coupled with the negligible delay mean that is is perfect for live performance applications, enabling real-time delivery over wireless links.
With a multitude of potential applications in the professional audio industry, apt-X Live boasts of audio quality specs, low latency and error resilience all at low data rates.
"apt-X Live is the result of extensive development and research." explains APT's Managing Director, Noel McKenna. "We wanted to meet the industry's requirement for increased bandwidth efficiency and still maintain the exceptional acoustics and negligible delay that the industry associates with all apt-X algorithms. Seeded from the same architectural principles as the established apt-X range and offering a compression ratio of 8:1, apt-X Live offers an unparalleled combination of quality and efficiency."
apt-X Live has already proven its outstanding audio quality in a series of independent listening tests where participants were unable to discern any difference between 24bit, 48kHz PCM Audio and apt-X Live.
This technology will have a particularly significant impact in the field of digital wireless audio, according to APT. To date, many microphone and headset manufacturers have been hampered in their attempts to "go digital wireless" due to the lack of any available suitable technology. With a delay, unequalled in the industry, of under 2ms apt-X Live enables the streaming of digital audio in real time over a wireless link and removes any issues associated with video lip sync or on-stage timing.
apt-X Live will be available to license from October 2006. Licensing fees were not released.
