Carbon Design Systems and Mentor Graphics Corp. announced the immediate availability of Mentor’s 8051 microcontroller family on Carbon’s IP Exchange web portal. These models feature a link with the Keil µVision IDE and debugger by ARM to enable interactive software debug.
Carbon’s models of the 8051, 8051W and 8051EW microcontrollers from Mentor are compiled directly from the implementation register transfer level (RTL) code. These models integrate directly with Carbon’s SoC Designer Plus virtual platform and can also execute in any leading RTL simulator. Each model can be interactively debugged using a direct integration with Keil’s uVision Debugger. Each model also integrates directly with Mentor’s Questa Codelink to further simplify debug.
The M8051 is a high performance 8-bit microcontroller. This microcode-free design is software compatible (including instruction execution times) with industry standard discrete devices, having all their core features, and the additional features corresponding to the Intel 8051/8031/80C51BH/80C31BH/87C51 parts except that ONCE mode and Program Lock are not supported. (See here)
The M8051W is a high performance version of the 8-bit microcontroller, requiring just two clocks per machine cycle rather than the 12 clocks per cycle of the industry standard device while keeping functional compatibility with the standard part. This allows the M8051W to run up to six times faster than the standard part for the same power consumption - or to have one sixth of the power consumption when run at the standard speed. (See here)
The M8051EW offers a complete, high performance 8051 core and development kit, based around Mentor Graphics’s highly successful M8051W implementation of this popular 8-bit microcontroller coupled with the addition of on-chip debug capabilities. While the standard part is designed around a 12-clock machine cycle, both the M8051W and the M8051EW use a two-clock machine cycle to facilitate particularly fast and/or low power embedded solutions whilst retaining functional compatibility with the industry standard part.(See here)
